Client Profiles: Luis



ECDA services are located in Boyle Heights, that has been home to one of the largest Mexican populations in the United States. A small (6.5 square miles) densely (95,000+) populated urban neighborhood where families are living below poverty (26.1%) and having difficulty finding employment (unemployment 17.1%). ECDA’s Case Managers strive to assist customers to better their lives, create self sufficiency and advocate for themselves and the community in reducing these statistics.

Luis Gonzalez was born and raised in Ramona Gardens Housing Projects. and grew up surrounded by peer pressure and the “fast life”, growing up he remembers gang activity and drugs surrounding him, “impossible to not fall into these surroundings.” As a grown man he realizes that his environment presented many obstacles and lacked opportunities.

 

In November 2014 he decided to take action and prepare himself for the future. Through the FamilySource Center Luis was referred to the Work Source Center where he participated in resume building workshops and trainings. He has come a long way since his first initial assessment with his case manager. “I came in without employment and was assisted initially financial education and calfresh, going on to acquire seasonal employment with UPS and Office Depot.” Due to his hard work and commitment he has now obtained permanent employment at UPS and has received an outstanding achievement award through UPS. Luis has overcome the barriers and obstacles and continues to strive for a better future, making it his goal to work hard and be an example to other youth.
